The Story Behind, The Adventures of OM

The Adventures of OM is a book written for children aged 8-12 years and beyond. The essence of this children's book lies in a heartfelt journey rooted in love, loss, and the quest for understanding.  The story began with the author's youngest son, a tender-hearted child grappling with the heavy concept of death. This struggle was ignited by several poignant experiences: the loss of his beloved Nanna, the challenges of multiple COVID lockdowns, and the author's return to the NHS as a frontline nurse.

As the world around him confronted the stark realities of life and loss, he found himself entangled in a web of anxiety, wondering about what lies beyond.  In response, the family rallied together to alleviate his fears, engaging in open and honest conversations about the topic that weighed so heavily on his mind. The real turning point came when he bravely approached his Grandma, seeking answers to his questions about death after hearing that one of her friends had recently "passed away." Her pragmatic view, that death signifies the end, left him feeling despondent and confused. Concerned for him, she suggested he speak to the author, knowing they had a “very different view” on the subject.

That evening, the author gathered their son and daughter close, sharing beliefs that had been shaped by years of experience as a nurse. They recounted transformative moments spent at the bedsides of those nearing the end of their journeys. In these profound encounters, the author witnessed what many refer to as the energy of life, dynamic, fluctuating, and endless.  Having always felt this energy that binds all beings together, the author described their connection to nature and animals. They recounted the ability to perceive the energies of those who had passed on, who would reveal themselves in moments of clarity. Embracing this gift, the author recognised that this energy, which they referred to as OM, the universal sound, remains ever-present, connecting us to everything we can see, touch, feel, and much more that lies beyond our perception.

Inspired by their eagerness, the children urged the author to capture these thoughts in a story to help them remember their conversation. The Adventures of OM was born. What began as a means to comfort the young minds of the author’s children has blossomed into a tale that resonates with readers of all ages. The Adventures of OM aims to inspire a sense of peace about life's transitions while instilling hope and understanding. It has become a narrative that sparks reflection and offers a new perspective on the journey beyond, not only for children but also for adults seeking solace.
